#poliglot #SMUF 🔗

Poligloţii încep de mici. Acesta este probabil unul dintre ingredientele succesului lor.

Ca mulţi copii născuţi în familii ardelene, mi-am început viaţa de poliglot învăţând româna şi maghiara. Am înregistrări de la doi ani vorbind în ambele limbi. La trei ani, am început să învăţ engleza împreună cu tatăl meu. Patru ani mai târziu, am devenit interesată de franceză. Italiana a urmat; am învăţat-o urmărind desene animate pe posturile italiene. Telenovelele au făcut parte şi ele din călătoria mea lingvistică (este cazul multor români) când atenţia mea s-a îndreptat asupra spaniolei. Apoi, pe măsură ce m-am maturizat, am realizat ce îmi place şi ce nu. Am înţeles că pot alege – şi am ales japoneza.

Bineînţeles, nu toate limbile pot fi stăpânite la acelaşi nivel. Mai mult, există, ca în orice relaţie, suişuri şi coborâşuri, momente când o limbă ţi-e mai dragă decât toate celelalte, când adoraţia şi fascinaţia pentru vocabularul şi gramatica unei alte limbi trec dincolo de situaţiile obişnuite, lumeşti, ori când eşti sătul să auzi vorbindu-se într-o limbă sau chiar să şi rosteşti câteva cuvinte în respectivul grai!

Când prima ta profesie te poartă departe şi în acelaşi timp aproape de unde ai început, bucuria dinăuntrul tău nu (prea) are egal. Călătoritul şi scrierea de călătorie pot reprezenta o extensie ori o altă dimensiune a unui traducător. Aici intră în scenă limbile. Să experimentezi o cultură atunci când vorbeşti limba locului este foarte diferit faţă de a te bizui pe traducerile şi explicaţiile altor persoane. Nu voi uita niciodată cum am purtat o discuţie despre istorie în maghiară cu domnul responsabil de muzeul Bătăliei de la Mohács... cum am început să vorbesc dintr-o dată franceza de atât de multe ori... cum am putut comunica în Argentina cu localnicii şi am pus bazele unor prietenii trainice... cum am cerut întotdeauna indicaţii şi informaţii privind mâncarea minunată (sunt vegetariană) în Italia... sau zâmbetul răsărit pe faţa mea prima oară când am interacţionat cu vorbitori nativi de japoneză în centrul japonez în care studiam.

Atât de multe amintiri şi vremuri frumoase! Trec dincolo de statul la birou sau într-o cabină de interpret. Poligloţii nu se opresc niciodată; până la urmă, sunt atâtea limbi în lume! /ce gând tentant!/ Am putea chiar susţine că poligloţii şi călătorii împărtăşesc această viziune: cu cât mai mare-i provocarea, cu atât mai dulce-i călătoria.

Polyglots start young. This is probably one of the main ingredients to their success.

Like many children born in Transylvanian families, I began my polyglot life learning Romanian and Hungarian. I have recordings that show my mastery of these two languages at the age of two. At three, English followed, as I began studying it with my father. Four years later, my interest turned to French. Italian came next; I learned it while watching cartoons on Italian channels. Telenovelas were also part of my linguistic journey (the case of many Romanians) when my attention turned to Spanish. As I matured, I became aware of my likes and dislikes. I also realised that I could choose – and I did. I chose Japanese.

Of course, one cannot master all the languages in the portfolio at the same level and there are – like in all relationships – ups and downs, times when one loves a language more than the others, when the adoration and fascination for the vocabulary and grammar of another language go beyond the regular, earthly boundaries, or when one is sick and tired of listening to a language being spoken or of uttering even a few words in that language!

When your first profession takes you far and yet very close to where you started, the joy you feel inside has (almost) no equal. Travelling and travel writing can be an extension or another dimension of a translator. And that’s where languages step in. Experiencing a culture when you speak the language of the locals is a different story from having to rely on the translations and explanations of others. I will never forget speaking about history in Hungarian with the curator of the museum of the Battle of Mohács... starting to speak French out of nowhere on so many occasions... being able to communicate with Argentineans in their native language and build some solid friendships that have stood the test of time... (always) asking for directions and information on the wonderful food (I’m a vegetarian) when in Italy ...the big smile on my face the first time when I interacted with native Japanese speakers in the Japanese centre where I was studying.

So many good memories and times! They go beyond sitting at a desk or in an interpreting booth. A polyglot never stops; after all, there are so many languages in the world! /what a tempting thought!/ We might even claim that polyglots and travellers share this ultimate view: the tougher the challenge, the sweeter the journey.

Este probabil greu de înţeles de către străini felul în care noi, românii, râdem unii de alţii în funcţie de regiunea în care suntem născuţi; ascunde adevăruri amare dar amuzante. Moldovenii sunt înfăţişaţi drept leneşi, oltenii – drept fuduli, ardelenii – drept lenţi. Asta – ca să puteţi lega lucrurile.

Mai este de ţinut seamă de influenţele austro-ungare ce şi-au pus amprenta asupra limbii pe care o vorbim acum. La final, lăsând la o parte istoria şi – uneori – umorul de prost gust, trebuie să recunoaştem că Transilvania îşi datorează mare parte din romantism şi farmec accentului regional şi limbajului exprimat agale, însă amuzant şi colorat.

Nu te considera ardelean până când nu ai scos pe gură primul tău „ioi”. Ai avut o zi grea de lucru? Ţi-a împrăştiat pisica prin curte toate hainele pe care le-ai scos la uscat? Ai ţinut prea mult prăjitura în cuptor? Este timpul să foloseşti cuvântul magic. Cu un suspin obligatoriu după.

Fără să te gândeşti măcar, îl foloseşti de 50 de ori pe zi. Cel puţin. Şi nu e nici măcar o negaţie, ci un cuvânt de umplutură incluzând întreg spiritul Transilvaniei: „no”. Vei începe chiar să îl combini cu adverbe... şi verbele vor urma numaidecât.  

Mai dramatic decât „ioi”, dar mai puţin utilizat, „tulai” poate avea mai multe sensuri – de la surpriză la bătut la cap şi mai apoi la furie. Finalurile sunt însă fericite şi pline de haz.

Uită de „salut”, „bună”, „hei”! Eşti în Transilvania şi „servus” este bătut în cuie aici. Pronunţat în diverse moduri. [Vei înţelege şi asta. În timp.]

Probabil că nu vei trece testul tău de „adopţie” transilvăneană până când „ni” nu va fi, în cele din urmă, sinonim în minte şi acţiuni cu „uite”, „ia” şi „fă repede”, chiar şi pentru standardele transilvănene.

Ultimele două sunt, în fapt, un adjectiv şi un adverb, însă, cumva, ardelenii le-au transformat în interjecţii. Nu vei mai spune „frumos” sau „drăguţ”; te vei obişnui să etichetezi totul ca „fain”.

Ei bine, cât îţi bei cacaua pe lângă pădure într-o dimineaţă, te simţi copleşit de miresmele pajiştilor într-o după-masă ori te găseşti în mijlocul unei mulţimi primitoare într-o seară, vei şti sigur că să ajungi în acest ţinut de basm a fost scris, a fost obligatoriu, a fost „musai”.

Probably hard to understand by foreigners, the way in which we – Romanians – make fun of one another depending on our region of birth does hide some bitter yet funny truths. Moldavians are pictured as lazy, Oltenians – as prideful, Transylvanians – as slow. This piece of information is designed to help you connect the dots.

 So is the following: the century-long Austro-Hungarian influences made their mark on the language we currently speak. In the end, leaving aside history and – at times – tasteless humour, one must admit that Transylvania owes much of its romanticism and charm to its regional accent and slow-paced, though funny and colourful, language.    

Don’t think of yourself as Transylvanian until you’ve uttered your first ‘ioi’. Did you have a tough day at work? Did your cat suddenly drag all the clothes you’ve put out to dry all around the courtyard? Did the cake overcook? It’s time for the magic word. Plus a mandatory sigh afterwards.   

Without even thinking, you’re using it 50 times a day. At least. And it’s not even a negation, but a filler word stating the very spirit of Transylvania: ‘no’. You will even start to combine it with adverbs... and verbs are likely to follow in no time.

More dramatic than ‘ioi’, but less used, ‘tulai’ may lend different meanings to surprise, nagging, or anger. Most of them have a happy, enough-to-make-a-cat-laugh ending.

Forget ‘salut’, ‘bună’, ‘hei’! You’re in Transylvania and ‘servus’ is the greeting norm here. Pronounced in different fashions. [You’ll also get that. In time.]

You’re probably not passing your Transylvanian ‘adoption’ exam until ‘ni’ is finally synonymous in your mind and actions to ‘look’, ‘take’, and 'do it fast’, even for Transylvanian standards.

The last two are an adjective and an adverb, actually, but somehow Transylvanians made them qualify as interjections. You won’t say ‘beautiful’ or ‘nice’ anymore, you will get accustomed to labelling everything you like as ‘fain’.

Well, while you sip your cocoa by the forest one early morning, feel overpowered by the scents of the meadows one late afternoon, or simply get in the middle of the welcoming crowd one evening, you’ll know for sure that reaching this fairy tale land was written down in your destiny path, it was obligatory, it was ‘musai’.
